18-Year-Old Receives 50 Years For Murder

Malik Vandiver, 18, who shot a West Baltimore woman as her young son watched television in the next room, was sentenced yesterday to 50 years in prison. After an August trial that featured the 6-year-old boy as one of the main witnesses, Vandiver was convicted of second-degree murder and use of a handgun in the commission of a crime. Bayonna Cox, 29, was fatally shot Jan. 8, 2005, in her home near Druid Hill Park. Circuit Judge Althea M. Handy sentenced Vandiver to 30 years for the murder conviction and a consecutive 20 years for the handgun conviction.
